Films show dementia may be life-changing but it need not be life-ending

Working with not-for-profit organisation Innovations in Dementia, people with dementia have been making films which they hope will inspire others to see people with dementia in a different light.

The films are about story-telling, sculpture, and hidden carvings; subjects as diverse as the people who made them.

The films were launched to an invited audience at the Exeter Picturehouse on the 12th April. The films are now available online, free of charge, at the Innovations in Dementia website.

Steve Milton – Director of Innovations in Dementia explains why the films have been made:

“The overwhelming public perception of someone with dementia is of someone who is cut off from the world, from other people, and from their own lives. We wanted to work with people with dementia to show that this need not be the case. All of the films we have made show people with dementia continuing to engage with the world around them, continuing to be creative, and continuing to inspire others. We wanted to show that a diagnosis of dementia might be life-changing, but is not life-ending, and I believe that together we have achieved just that. These are not just films about dementia,  they are a testament to the energy and creativity of people living their lives with dementia."
