Cited in ‘refocusing the CPA’ and underpinning a number of national drivers the 10 ESC identify the minimum capabilities that should be held by all mental health staff and be evident in the way services are commissioned and delivered.
The original materials were launched in 2005 and piloted nationally. Within NEYH we had 14 ESC pilot sites, from a variety of service areas. The aims of the pilots were to field test the materials and feedback to the national programme.
Following the feedback from the pilot the original materials were revised, the major changes been with module 5. Building on the initial enthusiasm during the pilot phase Y&H CSIP have delivered an ESC implementation programme across the patch. The aim of the programme is to:
- To respond to the revised learning materials
- To raise the profile of the ESC
- To ensure links with other policy drivers i.e. CPA, MHA, NWW
- To develop capacity and capability across the patch
- To share and spread good practice
Phase one of the implementation programme consisted of 2 distinct programmes one aimed at further education colleges and the other aimed at mental health providers. The Education programme, funded by the Learning skills council entailed delivering 3 six day ‘trainer the trainer’ programmes and 2 awareness raising days to Further Education colleges in the North East. The second programme aimed at providers of mental health services consisted of 2 four day train the trainer programmes. Both programmes evaluated very positively and resulted in 48 people attending train the trainers and 17 completing awareness training.
As previously stated the ESC represent the capabilities that should be demonstrated by all staff working in Mental health services and continue to be cited in national documents such as the CPA review, NWW for everyone, CCTA and locally developed tools such as Integrated Packages Approach to Care (InPAC) programme. In response, CSIP Yorkshire and Humber have continued to support further implementation across the patch and building on feedback from phases one and two we have recently developed a range of materials to further support the integration of ESC into local organisations.
The new locally developed materials were launched at an ESC introductory workshop and facilitators’ workshop held in July and consist of:
Introductory workshop
To be used in conjunction with module 2 of the ESC the one day introductory workshop aims to provide an overview of the ESC and allows participants to undertake an activity that represents each of the 10 capabilities. This workshop will be particularly relevant to team leaders or facilitators who will be required to deliver this as part of the CCTA.
Developed to support in-house trainers to deliver a one day ESC introductory workshop within their organisation, the materials consist of:
- A facilitator’s handbook (which incorporates/ provides a structured lesson plan, learning outcomes and tools required)
- A participant’s workbook (which incorporates learning outcomes and a workshop programme)
- A supporting presentation
Facilitators’ workshop
Aimed at organisations who wish to develop a cohort of ESC trainers, the one day facilitators’ workshop provides an insight into the full ESC learning materials and explores the delivery of all 6 modules.
Developed to support in-house trainers to deliver a one day facilitators workshop within their organisation, the materials consist of:
- A facilitator’s handbook (which incorporates a structured lesson plan, learning outcomes and tools required)
- A participant’s workbook (which incorporates learning outcomes and a workshop programme)
- A supporting presentation
Four Day Programme
Designed to provide a structured programme to support the facilitation of the full ESC programme these training materials should be used in conjunction with the original ESC learning materials.
Developed to support in-house trainers to deliver the four days ESC programme within their organisation, the materials consist of:
- A facilitator’s handbook (which incorporates provides structured lesson plan and tools required)
