Race, Gender and Age Equalities

This programme aims to ensure that everyone has equal access to mental health services, regardless of their race, gender or age.

Focused Implementation Sites (FIS)

Focused Implementation Sites aim to improve services in mental healthcare for BME and excluded groups. FIS work across a whole system to implement 'Delivering Race Equality in Mental Healthcare' (DH 2005) with the aim of achieving the five year vision stated in the report.

There are 2 Focused Implementation Sites in this region:

  • South Yorkshire
  • Bradford

Gender Specific Services

The National Women's Mental Health Strategy was developed in recognition that the needs of women service users were not being adequately addressed. Alongside the Race Equality Framework, it represents an essential element of Department of Health policy to tackle inequalities. It is not the intention to focus on the needs of women at the expense of men, but to ensure equality of service delivery for all.

Gender and Women's Mental Health: Implementation Guidance (DOH, 2003) , which was greatly informed by prior consultation, outlines a series of aims, recommended actions and expected outcomes, to:

  • develop a gendered context for mental health and social care - across research, planning, commissioning, service organisation and delivery
  • deliver distinct high quality services for women service users.

It includes advice and resources to assist with implementation, examples of good practice and Department of Health actions to facilitate this process.   Our Gender specific work programme aims to support the implementation of this guidance.
