‘Services will be attuned to the needs and wishes of individuals and communities and will actively promote equality. Inequalities for black and minority ethnic groups in access to and experience of mental health care will have disappeared.’ DH (2009) New Horizons Towards a shared vision for mental health Consultation.
Purpose of the event
There has been huge interest in the Enhancing Pathways Into Care (EPIC) programme since its inclusion in the ‘New Horizons; Towards a shared vision for mental health Consultation’ (DH, 2009).
EPIC is an acronym for a programme called Enhancing Pathways into Care. It has been used to describe many different types of initiatives that have been established in health to improve patient pathways and access to services.
Sheffield wanted to try something different to combat certain problems with delivering mental health support to Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) people. The main issues surrounded patient experience, pathways to care, and – since it was felt BME people do better at home – the need to reduce hospital stay and widen the option to be treated at home.
A guide has been produced in response to the experience of establishing an EPIC programme in Sheffield to specifically address the concerns about black and minority ethnic patients’ experience and outcomes within mental health services. This guide, 'A recipe for appropriate care' enables other localities to repeat the good work completed in Sheffield and enable better outcomes for BME people in mental health care.
Yorkshire and Humber Improvement Partnership is an organisation dedicated to improving health and social care outcomes for the Yorkshire and Humber region. During this time of economic uncertainty it is important we reassess and be innovative regarding value for money in order to continue providing the best services for mental health, but in a more cost-effective way. This event will show how EPIC can improve Quality, promote Innovation, increase Productivity and assist Prevention.
The event is being organised in partnership with SACMHA (Sheffield African Caribbean Mental Health Association) and hopes to promote good practice and raise the quality of services received by BME people, but to also raise the awareness and reduce stigma of BME mental health issues.
Who Should Attend
There is strong evidence for the inequalities in mental health among some ethnic groups. The roots of these inequalities lie in social, not biological, factors, so the responsibility for remedial action extends to all the agencies that influence public mental health and well-being.
This regional event is targeted at anyone who holds some responsibility for the outcomes for people from BME communities in Mental Health Services and their pathways into care, such as:
- Commissioners
- Equality and Diversity Leads
- Quality Leads
- Mental Health Provider Trusts
- Health Delivery Partnerships
- 3rd sector organisations (voluntary and community sector organisations)
- Community Development Workers (CDW’s) and managers
- Operational managers
- Clinicians
