Dementia Awareness Week 4th – 10th July

4th July marks the beginning of National Dementia Awareness Week. Throughout this week, the following events and activities are taking place across the Yorkshire and Humber region to raise awareness and reduce the stigma attached to dementia.

Barnsley
Friday 9th July the Barnsley Independent Alzheimer's and Dementia Support Group (BIADS) launch will take place at the town hall. For further information Tel: 01226 280057.

Bradford
The Alzheimer’s Society Singing Group will be participating in a service held at Sandy Lane, Methodist Church on Sunday 4th July. Then the Meri Yaadain will host an Awareness Open Day at the Carlisle Business Centre on Wednesday 7th July. For further information contact: Ruth.Gallagher@alzheimers.org.uk

Calderdale
A Primary School art competition is being held – “a picture of something you want to remember”.

Craven, Ripon & Harrogate
The Alzheimer’s Society are raising awareness and fund raising with the support of 12 local schools. Then on Thursday 8th July a showcase event involving people with dementia is being held at the Sun Pavillions in Harrogate.

Doncaster
The Doncaster Dementia Forum will be launched alongside a local publicity campaign. The campaign will include a life story press release featuring a person with dementia. There will also be a charity golf event and people are being encouraged to wear a yellow item on July 9th and to attach the national awareness campaign strap line to their emails.  For further information contact: Wayne.Goddard@doncasterpct.nhs.uk

Hambleton & Richmondshire
In Catterick, Darlington College are organising Afternoon Tea for staff and students. There will also be coffee mornings and street collections taking place across the district.

Hull & East Riding
The Alzheimer's Society are holding “Afternoon Tea by the Sea” at the Floral Hall in Hornsea on Monday 5th July. For further information tel: 01482 211255. A local pharmacy campaign will also be promoting dementia awareness throughout the period.

Kirklees
A tea dance is being held at the Old People’s Centre Batley and “Tea at 3” at Huddersfield Town Hall on Monday 5th July. Then on Thursday 8th July an Information Day will be held at Kingsgate Shopping Centre.

Rotherham
On Tuesday 6th July, the first Carers Drop in Session will be held at Rotherham’s Carers Centre. Then on Wednesday 7th July there will be a tea party in Stainforth.

Scarborough, Whitby & Rydale
A new Dementia Café will be launched and local events will be held in the surrounding villages & at Scarborough library.

Sheffield
On Monday 5th, Dementia Awareness Week will be launched in the city along side a Community Dementia Forum at an event at Sheffield Town Hall. There will also be staffed information stands within the Northern General and Hallamshire acute hospitals from Monday 5th to Wednesday 7th July. Finally, on Friday 9th there will be a tea dance at Sheffield Hallam University for people with dementia, carers and invited guests, to be attended by David Blunkett. South West Yorkshire Partnership Foundation Trust
On Friday 9th July, an official launch of “A Portrait of a life” a multi media toolkit for life story work, will take place at Leeds University. For Further details contact: DCM@swyt.nhs.uk

The Alzheimer’s Society are holding a garden party in the grounds of Armley Grange on Tuesday 6th July; with the introduction of a memory tree. North Lincolnshire

A Tea Dance has been planned

North East Lincolnshire

Wakefield
On Thursday 8th July the Alzheimer’s Society are holding a Boccia (sit down bowls) Tournament at Wakefield Trinity Wildcats Stadium. The tournament will include teams from the 5 Forget-Me-Not Cafes.

On Monday 5th July a candle vigil is being held at St Helen’s Church, in memory of those affected by dementia. There will also be Tea Events held in care homes across the area.
