A Community Children’s Nursing Services regional workshop was held on 26th March 2009. It focussed on the future of Community Children's Nursing Services.
The Department of Health are undertaking a review of CCN services and are completing regional filed trip to ascertain the needs and developments in each region. As a region which has some highly developed and inspirational services it has been nominated to host an event, which will allow services to showcase their practice and contribute to the review.
The following presentations were delivered at the event:
- Children’s Outreach in Scarborough North Yorkshire
This presentation raises the issue of under staffing in Community Children’s Nursing Services and how an increased number of staff would lead to improved outcomes. - Delivering Children’s & Young Peoples Services for the Future.
The presentation sets out details of the Department of Health project which as part of the Transforming Community Services Programme has been set up as a specific project aiming to raise the profile and create a better understanding of the contribution that CCN services can make to the overall improvement of ill and disabled children’s lives. - Children’s Community Nursing Review
NHS Wakefield recently completed a review of children’s community nursing services. As a result, we are seeking to move from having a number of very small teams towards one larger team, working flexibly to deliver a range of services. This will improve cover and on-call arrangements as well as up-skilling staff and providing consistency of care. We are also planning to extend the service from focusing on complex care, to incorporating acute illness and injury and more long term conditions. We will be seeking to manage children in the community wherever appropriate rather than in hospital. Additional resources have been identified in our commissioning intentions however it is expected that moving care into the community will free up hospital resources and therefore will be at least partially self-funding. - Community Children’s Nursing - Skill mix and role design
